Honoraria
HJF may pay speakers who make academic presentations from education accounts.
A speaker is generally paid after they speak at your institution. Simply fill out and submit an Honorarium Request form (HJF #316), and a check will be processed through our Accounts Payable Department.
To request money to pay a speaker's honorarium, send an email to your HJF education program administrator with the following information:
- Contact information for potential donors (if new funds are needed to pay the honorarium);
- Event date and venue; and
- Speaker's contact information and Social Security number or tax identification number. (Please note that the SSN or TIN provided must be the SSN or the TIN of the person or institution to which the check is made out.)
To provide reimbursements for related expenses such as travel, lodging, food and parking, complete a Travel Expense Report (HJF #322) and submit it to the Education Programs Office along with a list of all expenses. Original receipts for expenses of $75 or greater must also be included.
A speaker is generally paid after s/he speaks at your institution. A check will be processed through our Accounts Payable Department within 10 business days of the time the request is received. The check will be sent directly to the speaker unless you specify otherwise.
If you experience a delay, it may be due to late receipt of the Honorarium Request form, insufficient funds in the Education Account or delay in receipt of speaker contact and payment information. The earlier we receive this information, the earlier we can remit payment.
Eligibility Criteria
Non-federal employees may accept honoraria, but government employees generally cannot. If a government employee speaks at an institution that wishes to pay the speaker an honorarium, HJF may accept a donation from that institution in lieu of an honorarium. Funds received would be deposited into the education account that benefits the government facility department/activity with which the speaker is associated. The funds then may be used for education purposes such as purchase of books and equipment or payment of speaker fees.
Because federal employees usually are not allowed to accept honoraria, HJF will not provide honorarium payments to these individuals unless the service provider submits to HJF a written statement from the appropriate government ethics office granting permission for acceptance.
