Program Management

HJF has undergone tremendous growth since our inception in 1983, as more and more military medical personnel and research sponsors have turned to us for assistance. Our success has established HJF as a reliable source for sound program management and collaborative scientific talent.

HJF offers solutions to meet the unique needs of military medical research programs efficiently and cost-effectively. In addition to our research administration services, the Foundation has extensive experience in the following areas, and is available to:

• Manage major research programs, including multi-site and international programs
• Help plan and initiate new programs
• Arrange collaborations with USU faculty and civilian medical organizations and scientists
• Lease or renovate laboratory, clinical and administrative spaces
• Professionally design and produce scientific posters and presentations
• Design, write and produce websites
• Develop password-protected websites to foster collaboration among sites and agencies
• Protect intellectual property and help license new technologies
• Conduct site selection and infrastructure development in the U.S. and abroad
• Install networking and communications systems
• Recruit teams committed to scientific discovery—nearly 90% of HJF's more than 1,400 employees work directly on medical research programs

HJF collaborates on many multi-disciplinary and tri-service programs, in conjunction with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) and other military research institutes in the U.S. and overseas. The breadth of our capabilities is reflected in the types of programs we support. For example:

The U.S. Military HIV Research Program, one of our largest programs, is a leader in the international effort to develop vaccines to combat HIV. The Foundation has nearly 200 employees working on this program. They, along with HJF headquarters personnel, provide a vast array of services including program and financial management, scientific research, laboratory renovation and management, clinical site management, conference management, custom management information systems, logistics, travel and production of posters, presentations and brochures.

The Center for Prostate Disease Research, a collaboration with USU and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, continues to make progress in research, patient care and education programs for prostate cancer. With more than 50 employees on this project at multiple sites, HJF provides project management, collaborative scientific talent, laboratory construction and management, clinical site management, travel services, communications, graphics and more.

Researchers with the Navy's Malaria Research Program are at the forefront of malaria research worldwide. The Foundation has more than 30 employees at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) devoted to this international malaria research initiative, which includes basic and clinical research.

RespiGam® (respiratory syncytial virus immune globuliin intravenous (human)) and Synagis® (palivizumab), products marketed by MedImmune, Inc., are the only two FDA-approved preventive measures against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). These drugs represent the culmination of more than 20 years of research, which began at the USU. In 1989, HJF facilitated a consortium agreement, which in turn led to the development and commercialization of these preventive therapies. This collaborative effort included the Foundation, USU, Virion Systems, Inc. and MedImmune, Inc.

Researchers with the Biological Defense Research Directorate at NMRC pioneered the development of handheld assays that quickly identify the five most common biological threats. The DoD, FBI and the Secret Service routinely use these assays. HJF provides resources and flexibility to support this important research and response program.
